Tiny Economy Star Quilt Block

Finished Size: 3" x 3" (Unfinished: 3 1/2" x 3 1/2")

This pattern adds a narrow frame around the center square, giving the classic Economy Block more depth and a pop of extra color.

Materials

  • Fabric A (Center Square): One 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square.

  • Fabric B (Center Frame): Two 1" x 1 1/2" strips and two 1" x 2 1/2" strips.

  • Fabric C (Inner Triangles): Two 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" squares, cut once diagonally to make 4 triangles.

  • Fabric D (Outer Triangles): Two 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" squares, cut once diagonally to make 4 triangles.

Instructions

1. Frame the Center

Before adding triangles, we need to "box in" the center square:

  • Sew the two 1" x 1 1/2" Fabric B strips to opposite sides of the Fabric A square. Press toward the strips.

  • Sew the two 1" x 2 1/2" Fabric B strips to the remaining two sides. Press toward the strips.

  • Your center unit should now measure 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".

2. Add Inner Triangles

  • Take the four triangles from Fabric C.

  • Fold each triangle in half to find the center point and align it with the center of each side of your framed unit.

  • Sew one triangle to each of the four sides using a 1/4" seam.

  • Press the seams toward the triangles and trim the "dog ears" (the tiny points sticking out).

3. Add Outer Triangles

  • Take the four triangles from Fabric D.

  • Center one triangle along each of the four sides of your current block.

  • Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.

  • Press the seams toward the outer triangles.

4. Square Up

  • Carefully trim the final block to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2".

  • Pro Tip: Ensure there is exactly 1/4" of fabric between the points of your stars and the edge of the block so you don't "chop" your points off when sewing the blocks together.
