Tiny Economy Star Quilt Block |
This pattern creates a classic "Economy Star" quilt block that finishes at 3" x 3", perfect for small projects or for adding a touch of detail to a larger quilt.
Materials
- Fabric A (Center Square): One 2" x 2" square.
- Fabric B (Inner Triangles): Two 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" squares, cut in half diagonally to yield four triangles.
- Fabric C (Outer Triangles): Two 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" squares, cut in half diagonally to yield four triangles.
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
- Sewing machine and thread
- Iron and ironing board
Instructions
- Prepare the Center: Take your 2" x 2" square of Fabric A. This is the center of your block.
- Add Inner Triangles:
- Take the four triangles from Fabric B.
- Center one triangle along each of the four sides of the Fabric A square, with right sides facing.
- Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance. The tips of the triangles will overhang the corners of the square.
- Press the seams toward the triangles and trim off the "dog ears" (the small overhanging triangles at the corners).
- Add Outer Triangles:
- Take the four triangles from Fabric C.
- Center one triangle along each of the four sides of the new block, with right sides facing.
- Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance. The tips of these triangles will also overhang the corners.
- Press the seams toward the outer triangles.
- Square Up: Carefully trim the block to a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" unfinished square, making sure that your center star points are a 1/4" from the raw edge of the block.
Note: For best results and accuracy, be sure to use a true 1/4" seam allowance and press your seams carefully as you go.
