This is a Goshen Star quilt block, which has a small star in the middle that I find very charming. You can experiment with different colours to create different effects with this block. For example, you could use white homespun fabric for the middle star instead of pink, and make it stand out more.

This quilt pattern by Rose Johnston is my favorite variation of the Irish Chain block. I love the "square in a square" center, and I can imagine the beautiful effect that could be created by using multiples of this block in an all-over quilt design.
