Quilt Size = 54 1/2 "x 54 1/2"
Block Size = 8 1/2" finished
YARDAGE REQUIREMENTS
  • 2-1/2 yards assorted lights
  • 1-1/2 yards assorted darks
  • 1/4 yard for thin inner border
  • 1-3/4 yards for outer border

CUTTING REQUIREMENTS
RAIL FENCE: From various lights, cut strips 2-5/8" wide. From these strips cut rectangles 2-5/8" x 4 -3/4". Total # of rectangles = 96.
STAR: From various darks, cut strips 2-5/8" wide, then cut into rectangles 2-5/8" x 4 -3/4". Total # of dark rectangles = 52.
  • Using varied darks, cut 3-1/4" strips, then cut into 3-1/4" squares. Total # of dark squares = 52.
  • From various lights, cut strips 2-5/8" wide, then cut 2-5/8" squares. Total # =104
  • Using varied lights, cut strips 3-1/4" wide, then into 3-1/4" squares. Total # 3-1/4" light squares = 52.

Inner Border: 4 one inch (1/2" finished) strips.
Pieced Border: Do not cut these until the main body of your quilt is constructed. Most pieces will be sewn during block construction. If extra pieces are needed, cut (2) 7/8" squares of darks and lights, seam diagonally through the middle, trim excess to one side of seam.
Outer Border: Cut 4 -1/2" (4" finished) strips.

CONSTRUCTION:

Directions allow for the use of a 1/4" seam allowance.

Sew 12 Rail Fence Blocks

Sew 13 Star blocks:
Unit A: Sew one 3-1/4" light square to one 3-1/4" dark square diagonally through the center. Seam again 3/8" to one side of the first seam. Cut between the two seams. (Seam allowances on both pieces will be between 1/8" & 1/4") Press to dark side. Using bias square, trim to get one 2-5/8" square and one 2" square. (2" squares are reserved for pieced border.)
Unit B: Sew one 2-5/8" light square diagonally through the middle of the square to one 2-5/8" x 4 -3/4" rectangle. Trim excess fabric and press to dark.
Sew Unit A to light 2-5/8" square, then sew this piece to Unit B. sew three more to make one block.
Alternating Stars and Fences, with stars being in all four corners, sew blocks into strips and sew strips together. Quilt should now measure 42.5"

Inner Border ; Add 1/2" finished (1" cut) border.

Pieced Border is sewn on next. Sew 1-1/2" (2" cut) half square triangles together in a 30 piece length. Attach to quilt. Measurement of quilt is now 46.5".

Final Border : Sew a 4" finished (4 -1/2" cut) border to the outside edges. The quilt should be 54.5" x 54.5"
