Materials Needed

  • Fabrics: Six different 5” squares
  • Templates: 1” triangle and 2” hexagon templates
  • Cutting Tools: Rotary cutter and mat

Cutting Instructions

  1. Cut six 5” squares from your chosen fabrics.
  2. From each fabric, cut three 1” wide strips (ensure at least two strips are 5” long).
  3. Use the 1” triangle template to cut each 1 ¾” square into triangles.

Piecing the Center Hexagon

1. Assemble the Center: Start with six colored 1” triangles.

  • Sew the 1st triangle to the 2nd.
  • Attach the 3rd triangle to the 2nd.
  • Continue this process until all triangles are sewn.

2. Combine Sets: Sew the first set of triangles to the second set, aligning carefully and pinning to ensure precision. You may need a seam ripper for adjustments.

3. Trim: Use the 2” hexagon template to trim your piece into a clean hexagon.

Creating the Swirling Color Strips

1.First Ring:

  • Sew the first strip, matching the triangle's color. Leave ¼” unsewn at the bottom for a partial seam.
  • Press outward and trim.

2. Continue Adding Strips: Repeat the process for matching colors, finishing with a final strip that connects back to the first strip.

3. Trim the Ring: Cut parallel to the previous strip to create a clean hexagon shape.

Adding More Rings

  • Repeat the steps for additional rings, ensuring to start each with a partial seam.
  • After completing three rings, you will have a hexagon piece measuring approximately 4.5”.
