This tutorial will guide you through creating a beautiful Swirling Hexagon quilt block using six different fabrics. You can adjust the size by adding more swirls, and the basic structure consists of strips and triangles.
Materials Needed
- Fabrics: Six different 5” squares
- Templates: 1” triangle and 2” hexagon templates
- Cutting Tools: Rotary cutter and mat
Cutting Instructions
- Cut six 5” squares from your chosen fabrics.
- From each fabric, cut three 1” wide strips (ensure at least two strips are 5” long).
- Use the 1” triangle template to cut each 1 ¾” square into triangles.
1. Assemble the Center: Start with six colored 1” triangles.
- Sew the 1st triangle to the 2nd.
- Attach the 3rd triangle to the 2nd.
- Continue this process until all triangles are sewn.
3. Trim: Use the 2” hexagon template to trim your piece into a clean hexagon.
Creating the Swirling Color Strips
1.First Ring:
- Sew the first strip, matching the triangle's color. Leave ¼” unsewn at the bottom for a partial seam.
- Press outward and trim.
3. Trim the Ring: Cut parallel to the previous strip to create a clean hexagon shape.
Adding More Rings
- Repeat the steps for additional rings, ensuring to start each with a partial seam.
- After completing three rings, you will have a hexagon piece measuring approximately 4.5”.
This swirling hexagon design can be adapted in size and color for your quilting projects. Enjoy the creative process and the unique patterns you can create!
